I took the ferry to Watsons Bay to scan Sydney's waters and beaches for the beast that sits at the top of the food chain - and perhaps lurks at the bottom of the harbour. Last week, experienced sailors piloting two boats around the harbour saw an 8ft-long fish they swore was a great white shark. If they were right, it would be the first ever harbour sighting of the muscular monster responsible for most of the reported shark deaths in Australia in the past years. Walking along the harbourside to catch the ferry, there were ominous signs in support of the hoary old harbour fishermen who reckon that pollution and fishing controls have restored sea-life to its s levels.

Balmoral Beach is definitely one of my favourite beaches in Sydney. Balmoral beach offers something for everyone, except perhaps, if you came to surf, as there is little to no waves. My idea of a perfect day at Balmoral beach is to have fish and chips for lunch, relax on the beach, go for a swim and walk along the boardwalk. For Fish and Chips, try Bottom of the Harbour. Here you can eat in on the outside table and chairs or take-away to the beach.

Mosman is larger than life. Then there are the tourist attractions, including Taronga Zoo and the photogenic parklands at Bradleys Head and Middle Head. The price of real estate is also legendary. So vast is Mosman that its 30, residents have carved out several distinct localities, including Beauty Point, Clifton Gardens and Georges Heights. Residents are accustomed to the occasional swarm of inflatable naval boats sharing the water with genteel north shore watercraft during training exercises.
