LGBTQ representations in hip hop music have been historically low. Hip hop has long been portrayed as one of the least LGBT-friendly genres of music along with heavy metal and country music with a significant body of hip hop music containing homophobic views and anti-gay lyrics. Labels such as homo hop or queer hip hop group all artists identifying as members of the LGBTQ community into a subgenre of hip hop based solely on their sexuality. These subgenre labels are not marked by any specific production style, as artists within it may simultaneously be associated with virtually any other subgenre of hip hop, or may also make music that falls outside the subgenre entirely. Artists who have been labelled as part of the genre have, however, varied in their acceptance of the terminology.

LGBT artists have continually challenged mainstream understandings of gender and sexuality, and the impact of this on our society is immeasurable. As Pride Month comes to a close, we would like to showcase a number of LGBT artists who have influenced the progress of art and society throughout the past hundred years or so. While this list is in no way comprehensive, we hope to highlight some of the many creative individuals who as members of the LGBT community have put their unique stamp on art history. These days, with more and more public figures coming forward about their sexuality, it was only a matter of time that we here at TheBacklot. Compiling a list like this was no small feat. Trust us that it was not done in malice. We simply tried to assemble a list of those artists we feel have been both successful in their careers while also raising awareness toward gay rights issues and giving back to the community in which they belong. We also decided to rule out those artists whose sexuality was often rumored to be gay, but have never been confirmed by the artists themselves, take Morrissey or Liberace for example.
